It would be hard for me to express just how much I adore these two people, or how honored I was to shoot their wedding, so I’ll just say that it was incredibly fun to photograph the amazing #fancyhatwedding (as it was hash-tagged on Twitter) of Katie and Cary.
Last month I photographed a doljanchi, a Korean tradition celebrating a child’s first birthday. It was a big day for little Caden, who looked adorable in his baby hanbok. During the doljabi (a ceremony where the baby picks an item to determine his future), Caden reached for a book, symbolizing his career as a scholar. It seems unlikely that he’ll follow his dad’s footsteps into the video game industry as he didn’t go near the Xbox 360 controller!
Gunther and Vivien are a really fun couple with a great sense of humor. Not many people think to hire Cal’s mascot Oski the Bear for their wedding at the UC Berkeley Faculty Club. As an alumni, I was very excited at the prospect! Vivien is a crafty girl who found personalized cake toppers to match their wedding day outfits, and her wedding gown was based on a Baby the Stars Shine Bright (Japanese lolita brand) jumperskirt, handmade by a local seamstress.
Beautiful couple, beautiful day in Calistoga, at Hans Fahden Vineyards, May 15, 2010. Jenn and Brian’s wedding was full of DIY goodness, like the photo wall adorned with old family photos and the giant Jenga set they finished during our engagement shoot! I have no doubt they will build a marriage as strong and fantastic as the projects they put together, together.
Getting my gear together to shoot Brian and Jenn’s wedding. They are an adorable couple, as you can tell, and if their homemade giant Jenga set and power tool engagement session is any indication, this wedding should be a blast.

Vivien and Gunther are a really fun couple, as you can probably from these terrifically silly, Valentine-themed engagement photos. We visited the restaurant where they got engaged and frolicked in a nearby park.
Oh, remember how I called them “silly” earlier? Engagement ring thumb war!
Congratulations to Juliana and Mike, whose wedding I had the pleasure to shoot on January 23, 2010. The ceremony took place at the UC Botanical Gardens in Berkeley, and despite a forecast of rain, we found some nice little moments of sun. It was a small gathering of close family and friends in a cozy greenroom… a wonderful experience.
I did this engagement shoot for Katie and Cary before knowing that I was going to be their wedding photographer, or that I’d play the ukulele during their ceremony, or that I’d spend the week in between their big day and San Diego Comic Con in their great company, in Vegas. Some friends are worth a trip to the moon and back, or in this case, Vegas.
In anticipation of their “fancy hat” old-timey wedding, I fired off a roll of film as well. Not everyone wants an engagement photo reminiscent of Dorothea Lange, but I would, and I knew Katie would. Here is my best attempt.
